Pros: Lightweight and needs very little light to operate.
Cons: A little pricey.
You never really know how bad that you have it until you are shown the light by something else. Such is the case with my keyboard for my desk top computer. My old keyboard was not really that old, I think that it was only about one year old and I started having trouble with a lot of the keys sticking and it was getting a little bit on the noisy side while I was typing. Now, I am not very proficient when it comes to typing, but I do a decent job, it just takes me a little bit longer that most. With my keyboard acting up, it would slow me down even more. I did not go to Best Buy looking for a solar keyboard, I just stumbled onto this one. I could not believe that this was wireless and took no batteries. This only cost me $80.00 and I did not have to worry about the batteries.
The Solar Keyboard is a little different than most because it only weighs 1 pound 11 ounces, compared to my old one which is 2lb 3 ounces. This keyboard is 17" x 6-3/16" in size, a considerable amount smaller than my old one. Logitech has placed two solar panels in the surface, one in the upper right and upper left corners of the surface of the keyboard. These two solar panels are 1" x 5-5/8" in size, and the keys sit exactly 1/8" above the surface.
On the bottom side of this keyboard you have 6 rubber sliders that will help protect the surface that this board sits upon. There is also two feet that can be pulled out to raise up the one side to make the keyboard sit at an incline. The top surface of this keyboard has a nice glossy black finish and the bottom side is a solid white finish.
You will need no batteries for this keyboard and it comes with a Logitech unifying 2.4GHz wireless receiver and a wireless extender, plus a small 5" x 5" silk cleaning cloth. This keyboard can be used for both a laptop or a desktop computer. If you use this for a desktop then you should use the wireless extender to maximize the radio frequency that it puts out.
The first thing that you will need to know is that you have to have a minimum of Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 for this keyboard to operate properly. You will also need some sort of light source, whether it be a light from the window or a desk lamp, or ceiling light. It will not matter the solar panels are very sensitive. You should also use the cleaning cloth that comes with it, because if you use something else you are liable to scratch the face of the panels.
This keyboard is so simple to start up the hardest thing that you have to do is to enjoy it after you plug it in. It is so simple that they do not even give you a manual, if you wish to get a manual you will have to go to the Logitech website to get one. What little instructions that they do give you is on the inside of the inner box that the keyboard comes packaged in. Once you take this out of the package the only three things that you have to do to get this working is pull the yellow tab to activate the backup battery located in the center and plug the wireless extender and the unifying receiver into the USB port on your computer and the plug-and-play application should take over and your PC should recognize it automatically. Oh, yes, don't forget to switch the keyboard to the on position.
This first thing that you should notice is how quiet this keyboard is while typing, and then you will see a gauge that pops up on your desktop which will keep you updated with how much power that your solar keyboard has and how much that you are taking in. With the Logitech solar app. you do not have to worry about this having enough light to charge the solar panels with, because the lighting in your room will be enough to keep this working no matter if you store it in a drawer or underneath the desk in a hideaway drawer. By the push of the light button, you will be kept informed with everything that is going on as far as the solar power is concerned. It will not matter whether you have just a desk lamp or an overhead light, these solar panels are so sensitive that if you cover the panels with your hands the gauge will go lower and when you remove your hands the gauge will go up. The total set-up will only take a few minutes before you can start using your new keyboard.
This keyboard is so easy and comfortable to use and it is so quiet compared to my old one, that I can hardly hear the keys clicking when I try and type. It has stay charged up with just the light in my computer room, and it has been right around six months. The thin design that this has will allow you to tuck it away inside any drawer or a pull out platform from underneath your screen. You can even use this from a chair from twenty feet away just like I do, because it has a 2.4 GHz wireless receiver. This is very powerful and has worked without a glitch. You can use this without the extender on the back of the desktop but you will illuminate some of the power that this has to offer.
Other options and features
There are several other features that you should know about and they are the solar app. This will pop up on your desktop and it looks like a gauge on your dash board. You will see a light check gauge that will tell you how high or low the light energy that your keyboard is getting. This also has a digital readout to tell how much that you are getting, they recommend that you try and keep this at a constant 100 LUX or higher. This will make sure that you will enough energy to run your keyboard. This will stay lit up for 2min and 15 seconds, when it shut down all you have to do is push the light check button. It will flash green if it is ready for use and flash red when it requires more light to keep working.
A couple of other features that this has, is two bar graphs, one of them tells you what energy that you have used in the past, and the other one will tell you what you are actually using as it happens. This APP also will tell you how much energy that you have in reserve VIA a digital readout. If you look down a little bit lower there will be a notice that will also tell you how high your reserve it. There is even a picture of a thumbs up, to let you know that everything is okay. With this app you should have no problem keeping things intact and working properly.
To get all of the advantages of this solar keyboard, you need to know what all of the buttons are for. The first thing that I have learned is what the key that is marked "FN" is, and that is a quick function key option. All you need to do is hold this down and you can use the "F" keys for quick access. There are 12 different "F" keys to choose from and they are F1= Internet Home, F2=Launch E-Mail App, F3=Windows Search, F4=Calculator, F5=Media App, F6=Previous Track, F7=Play/Pause, F8=Next Track, F9=Mute, F10=Volume Up, F11=Volume Up, F12=Sleep Mode.
Along with all of your usual keys you will have an On/Off switch and a Light-check hot key, and of course the solar cells. According to the MFG you should never have to replace the back-up battery until you want to stop using this keyboard. When this happens you should just remove the battery then you can recycle the keyboard and battery.
The most unusual thing about Logitech, is that they have an electronics recycle program. They will let you send in your old electronic items at their cost, and in return they will give you 20% off of your next purchase. So, now you do not have to keep these lying around your house and be afraid to throwing them away. It is very simple to do, because I have already done it. All you have to do is go to their web site and click on the icon of the item and enter your shipping info and print out the shipping label and you will receive a discount code to purchase something on line towards a new product. Then just pack up your old product and send it in. If you are wondering what they do with these products, well, they sometimes refurbish them, and in the cases that they cannot refurbish them, they will be destroyed in a way that the state allows.
I am having so much fun with the ease that my finger run across this keyboard that I can put out whatever I am typing in twice the amount of time. The price for this was just a little on the high side but well worth it. The performance of the keyboard is outstanding and the quietness of the keys is very pleasant. Logitech has really out done itself this time, I have used several of their other items and have never been this impressed with a product as I am with this one. If you take a chance I can guarantee that you will not be dissatisfied with this keyboard.
