Pros: easy to use, highly effective, very gentle, no scent
Cons: slight quasi-oily residue left behind but it wipes off easily
Throughout the years, Ive used several eye makeup removers: good old-fashioned soap and water, baby oil, Maybelline Expert Eyes Eye Makeup Remover, and Loreal Eye Makeup Remover. Each had its flaws. But now I think I scored a winner.
Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover is a product that must be shaken to be activated. Although it is oil free, the best way to describe it is that there are two layers of liquid in the bottle much like in salad dressing. When shaken, the mixture blends together and creates a formula that removes eye makeup with ease, even waterproof mascara. It does not burn or sting and contains aloe and cucumber extracts to soothe skin.
It is available in two sizes: 3.8 ounces (the one I have) and 5.5 ounces. The smaller bottle retails for about $6, while the larger size retails for about $7.50. Both can be found at drugstore.com and many brick-and-mortar drug stores and discount chains.
Cyclopentasiloxane, Water, Cyclohexasiloxane, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Benzyl Alcohol, Sodium Chloride, Dipropylene Glycol, Poloxamer 182, Allantoin, Tripotassium EDTA, Benzalkonium Chloride, Glycerin, Cucumber Fruit Extract (Cucumis Sativus), Potassium Phosphate, Dipotassium Phosphate, Phenoxyethanol
Ive been using this eye makeup remover for a couple of weeks and I am amazed at how gentle it is. My old Maybelline remover, which smelled like witch hazel, used to foam up like a soap and sting my eyes when I needed to remove waterproof mascara. My Loreal one was even worse. It didnt foam up, but it burned and took a lot of effort to remove any sort of makeup. With this Neutrogena product, Ive had no irritation and the makeup glides off.
I give the bottle a little shake and then pour some of the liquid onto a cotton ball. With a couple of sweeps over my eye lids and under my bottom lashes, all of the makeup is removed. Some waterproof mascaras require a little more rubbing, but they come off fairly easily and without any burning or irritation.
The one thing I have noticed is that this oil-free remover does leave a shiny, almost oily residue behind. In that sense, it reminds me of baby oil. But its much lighter and comes off very easily with a tissue, a towel, or even the back of my hand. Since I usually wash off the rest of my makeup after I remove my eye makeup, the quasi-oily feel is not a concern. It washes off immediately.
There is no scent to this eye makeup remover. In the bottle, theres a sort of very light chemical scent, but I dont detect it at all once its on a cotton ball or on my face so its possible the scent is just from the plastic of the bottle.
This is the gentlest makeup remover Ive used. It feels soothing and even when it gets very near my eyes, it doesnt irritate them. Makeup disappears quickly and with little effort.
