Pros: No batteries required. Includes carrying bag. Easy for little children to use.
Cons: Blood pressure cuff much too large, stethoscope doesn't really work as it claims.
I recently bought this medical kit for my 4 year old daughter. These kind of creative play toys are always a hit. Kids go to the doctor enough so they are sure to know what to do with most of the items in the kit without any parental explanation. That's how it was for my little girl and her older brother; I only had to explain the otoscope.
The kit includes: play otoscope, stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, thermometer, bandage, spring-loaded syringe, and medical bag (for hauling all the medical gear).
Most of the gear is made of hard plastic. The Blood pressure cuff itself is vinyl with a Velcro adjustable closure. The thermometer has a knob on the tip you can turn to show different readings: 98.6/37 degrees and a smiley face, 101.2/38.4 degrees and a sad face, or 00.0 degrees. My kids love the spring-loaded syringe and give each other "flu shots" frequently. The medical bag is made of some synthetic fabric and has carrying handles with Velcro closures. The bandage is shaped like a bracelet and is hard plastic. Kids can easily slid it over onto their wrists...but it's a little small to put on a leg.
The claim on the box says that the blood pressure cuff is big enough for adult patients. We tried it out on me and it was too big, but it barely fit my husband. It doesn't even fit little kids at all. I will have to sew some more Velcro on it so that it will be more usable. The box also says that the stethoscope really works. I have yet to hear a heart beat. You can hear sounds when you move it around, but it doesn't really work for hearing a heart beat. My kids don't seem to mind though.
All in all, this is a fun toy to have. It provides a great springboard for imaginative play.
