Pros: It's a good idea --- in theory
Cons: There are very many major issues with this product!
Purchased machine 1 1/2 yrs ago & it's been nothing but problems. 1st was getting my older cat to use it, that took weeks. Next, the thing started beeping after it ran & manual didn't cover anything that applied to this problem. I called customer service & that was terrible because they didn't call back till next day. Woman on phone wanted me to start tearing things apart but we'd already taken processor off & cleaned the sensor which wasn't dirty. Finally she suggested I try picking up the cartridge & dropping it back down & that made flashes & beeps stop. I had to keep doing this all the time & even tried taping the cartridge securely to the unit but eventually it would error again. Although customer service woman said that it was a problem with some cartridges I've found it to occur with many of the cartridges I've used - have to lift it up & bang it back in a few times, also sometimes lifting the hopper cover off & replacing it will work.
Then there's the BIG problem of cooked poop. It works fairly well for poop of one cat but the other cat's poop is different consistency (sad that I now know this) & since it seems to be smaller turds it never gets completely scooped by unit. Therefore every time I hear it start up or see lights flashing I have to run & stick head in unit to see if someone pooped & if so have to get out slotted spoon that I bought & try to pick up the numerous poops that it missed. If I miss doing this my husband throws a fit as soon as he starts smelling the burnt poop & says it's going in the garbage.
I bought it after having Litter Maids for many yrs so I wouldn't have to deal with the litter jams & dump the bins, now I get to play with the poop every day!
Another major problem has been that since it is hooked up to laundry room drain I have problems every time that I do a load of wash because each time the water drains from washer it backs up into cat genie & it will even make the granules wet. That creates a problem since my older cat won't go in a pond & started going on the floor. My husband who has plumbing experience installed some sort of valve to prevent this but after a day or so the pressure from the washer draining ended up gurgling back into unit. So now I have to time my laundry & do a load of wash in the last hr before genie is due to "wake up" for the day, because after genie runs & does it's draining the problem is fixed till I do more laundry.
There have been other problems which I've figured out & dealt with on my own but these are the worst ones & most are on-going issues. It's a big pain.
