Pros: No daily scoopin, no pee smell, much more sanitary than a box!
Cons: It is not maintenance free but what is???
OK SO the first mistake everyone seems to make about this product is that there will be NO work involved...WRONG!!! It does a great job as long as you are willing to put in the maintenance work!
This is SO much nicer than having a disgustingly dirty cat litter box that your cat pees and poos in and then digs in and then walks around your house spreading all those nice nasty microbes :) Nice thought right?
We have had this product since August 2012. A couple months now. We have only had to clean clean it once and we have two indoor cats. We bought the side-rails because my old man cat can't seem to keep his bum low enough to keep the pee in so we tend to have to clean it more often than it says is necessary BUT...NOT having to smell a dirty litter box every day, and NOT having to empty one every day or every other day is SOOOOOOO AWESOME!!! Yes, sometimes the scoop misses a piece of poo and dries it and the smell is not pleasant but come on...it does not stink up an entire house, a room yes. It is not the end of the world however. Pick up the dehydrated poop, put it into the toilet and turn on the fan for a few minutes.
As for supplies...get on the auto ship program through amazon.com and it's a lot cheaper than buying elsewhere. The cat genie is cheaper than having to buy two bags of expensive corn cat litter (which is the ONLY cat little we could buy that would totally keep the ammonia smell out of the old litter box). It does require cleaning but so does a regular cat box! If you don't CLEAN clean your regular litter box once a month then I'm so sorry for all the nasty that is being spread around your house constantly. If you don't like the idea of having to clean out your toilet then don't have it hooked up in the bathroom. Have it hooked up in your laundry room and you won't even see the mess because it is going out with the dirty laundry water! Dirty toilet problem solved right there!
This is a great investment but not for anyone who thinks this is going to free them from ever having to touch it ever again! You do actually have to keep it clean and in working order and follow the directions that come with it. The company seems very willing to help with any questions that we have had. It IS a lot less work than a regular litter box and OH SO MUCH MORE SANITARY!!!! Because this cleans the granules between uses then each time kitty gets into dig they are digging in sanitized granules, not germ infested nasty litter that just makes my spine crawl just thinking about it!
For those who have problems with their machines, I'm sorry! We love ours! My only suggestion would be to follow ALL the directions, do ALL the troubleshooting, ask questions online in the forums, call their customer support numbers! There are enough of us out here that have been successful with these to know that they are well worth the money!
